Why is it important to teach non standard units before teaching standard units what are the principles of measurement

A

The early use of non standard unit in measurement activities may strengthen links between measurement and number this is achieved through the development of counting, understands of the quantity of numbers, and of the position of a number relative to other numbers in the measurement context.

Principles of measurement can include:

Measures are expressed by counting total numbers of units and are placed in a straight line
Encourage estimation develop a sense of size of the unit
During measurement activities the unit must not change
Measurement should be hands on and relevant to real life
