Formal algorithm

Method in which the majority of the population uses to solve problem

A detail set of instructions to produce a specific outcome
Automatic being able to be taught to, carried out by someone who doesn’t have to analyse deeply
For teacher algorithms are easy to teach students

Q

What are the advantages and disadvantages of teaching the formal algorithm to students

A

Algorithms do not correspond to the way people think about numbers

They encourage children to give up their own thinking leading them to lose their own ideas about how to solve the problems

Students are more likely to use calculator then that of in the past could lead to traditional taught algorithms being less effective at teaching students maths

Students use algorithms within problems which don’t need algorithms

Q

Why does Clarke recommend delaying teaching algorithms to at least 4th grade

Do you agree

A

Stops students to develop their own ideas into how to solve the problems leading the technology to be dependent on step on step procedures to solve problems

Helps develop their understanding for numbers

I agree
