Organization
A complete paper or document (especially academic papers) must include
Introduction, Body, Conclusion
the key to setting the reader on the right path as he/she reads on. It provides the writer’s purpose and position, and the specific elements to be developed
Introduction
model used to demonstrate the introduction
Inverted Triangle
usually the first sentence. It draws in the reader by grabbing the reader’s interest
The Hook
includes several sentences that give interesting background information about the topic. Moving towards the focus of the topic
General Comment
the last sentence in the introduction. it states the writer’s specific focus and position
Thesis Statement
good supporting paragraphs provide examples helping the readers to understand the writer’s idea while giving credibility to the ideas. These paragraphs focus on the main idea or thesis statement
Body
model used to demonstrate the body
Cylinder
model used to demonstrate the flow of information from the subtopic to its details
Inverted Triangle
introduces each main idea (subtopic) before it is developed
Topic Sentence
provides example through facts, personal experiences, definition and illustrations that support the topic sentence
Supporting Detail
provides a statement that ties up or finishes each subtopic in the next paragraph. For paragraph breaks within subtopic, it is not necessary
Close
provides a restatement of the thesis for the reader indicating that all points have been covered. It may include your opinion but should not introduce a new subtopic
Conclusion
generally appears in the first sentence of the conclusion. The restatement uses different words than the original thesis statement in the introduction
Restatement of Thesis
can include a summary of all the main ideas, an evaluation of the ideas and/or the writer’s opinion
Comment
is the end thought that ties up the topic for the reader
Final Statement
a system of communication which consists of a set of sounds and written symbols which are used by the people of a particular country or region for talking or writing

When writing, it is very important to use language that:

directive, expressive, informative
used to garner a response or action. usually from another person, commands and questions are forms or directive language

A mother telling her son to shut the door
Directive
allows a person to communicate wants, needs, thoughts, and opinions. It is the ability to request objects, make choices, ask questions, answer, and describe events
Expressive
Variations of expressive language
Speaking, gesturing, writing, facial expression, and vocalization
often seen in analytical reports, descriptions, arguments, and everyday speech. uses declarative statements.
Informative
a person uses _____ when they are making a statement that provides information or that adds emphasis onto known information
Informative Language
refers to all the technical rules that make up grammar and syntax. It covers aspects of language such as word order, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling
Mechanics
sequence of letters that compose specific words according to established and standardized rules
Spelling
a system of signs, marks, or symbols used in writing to separate sentences and clarify how a sentence should be read
