Quanitifying chem Flashcards
What is relative isotopic mass?
The mass of a single isotope
Determined by comparing the mass of ions of the isotope to the value of carbon-12
What is mass number?
Number of protons plus neutrons in an atom
What does the mass spectrometer reveal?
Number of isotopes In a given isotope of a sample.
Relative isotopic mass of each isotope
Percentage abundance of each isotope
Relative atomic mass of an element is?
Average mass of one atom, taking into consideration the number of isotopes of an element, their relative isotopic masses and relative abundance
What’s the mole?
A unit of measure, like a dozen.
One mole is defined as the amount of substance that contains as many particles as there are atoms in 12g of carbon-12 isotope
What is the molar mass
The mass of One mole of a substance
Gmol-1
What is a hydrated ionic compound?
An ionic compound that has crystallises from an aqueous solution to form a hydrated ionic compound. The water of crystallisation has been introduces and included into the crystal lattice.
What is an anhydrous ionic compound?
One that has had the water of crystallisation removed
What’s the emperical formula
The simplest whole number ratio of the atoms or ions present in a molecule or compound eg 1:2:3
What is the molecular formula
The actual composition of a compound that is made up of molecules. It may be the same as the emperical formula or a whole number multiple of it.
