Q

What is a chemical bond?

A

Forces of attraction between atoms. They are all electrostatic, between positive and negative charges.

Q

What is ionic bonding?

A

Metals and non metals react together and transfer electrons from the low electronegative to high electronegative element. The resulting ions electrostatic-ally attract each other and form lattices. THe attraction between them is the ionic bond.

Q

What is a ionic network lattice?

A

3D array of positive metal ions and negative non metal ions held together by strong electrostatic attraction between the ions.

Q

HOw is an ionic network lattice arranged?

A

In a regular repeating patternto achieve teh most stable arrangement. Opposite charged ions are as close as possible while same charged ions are as far away as possible.

12
Q

Why don’t ICS conduct electricity when solid?

A

The ions cant move and carry the charge

You need to have mobile charged particles to conduct electricity.

13
Q

Why are ICS hard?

A

Surface isnt easily scratched because of strong ionic bonds holding ions together.

14
Q

Why do ICS dissolve in water to form ions?

A

Water molecules can move between the ions and disrupt the rigid crystal structure.

15
Q

Why do ICS conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in aqueous solution?

A

MOLTEN- Ions are able to slide past each other and can therefore conduct electricity.
AQUEOUS- Ions dissociate from lattice and move freely.

16
Q

What is a dissolved ionic lattice solution called?

A

Electrolyte

17
Q

Why are ICS brittle?

A

Distortion of the crystal causes ions of like charge to come together, repulsion between them shatters or cleaves the crystal.

18
Q

What is a binary ionic compound?

A

Two elements are present

19
Q

What is a polyatomic ion?

A

Bound group of atoms with an overall charge.

20
Q

How name ICS?

A

Full name of metal, ide name of non metal. Eg sodium chloride.

21
Q

WHy do athletes drink sports drinks?

A

To rehydrate boost energy and replace ions lost in the body with sweating.

22
Q

What is a hydrated ionic compound?

A

Ionic compound that releases water when it is decomposed with heat. The H20 is part of it structure.

23
Q

How do we name hydrated ICS?

A

Zinc Chloride Tetra hydrate.

mono-1 di-2 tri-3 tetra-4 penta-5 hexa-6 hepta-7 octa-8 nona-9 deca-10
HYDRATE

24
Q

WHAT IS AN ELECTROLYTE

A

SUBSTANCE THAT DISSOCIATES TO FORM IONS (water soluble ionic compounds)
