A

The medical conditions policy must set out practices in relations to the following:

a) The management of conditions like asthma, diabetes or risk of anaphylaxis
b) Informing all staff and volunteers of the management of these.
c) Requirements arising if the child has specific health care needs, allergy or relevant conditions including:
1) Parent providing a medical management plan
2) Requirement for the plan to be followed specific to the needs of the child.
3) Requiring the development of a risk minimisation plan specific to the child’s needs:
- To ensure that the risks are assessed and minimised
- To ensure the safe practices of handling, preparation and consumption of food are developed.
- To ensure that practices and procedures to ensure parents are notified of any allergies that may pose a risk and strategies to minimise that risk are developed and implemented
- To ensure that practices and procedures ensure that all staff can identify the child’s medical management plan and the location of the medication are developed.
- To ensure that practices and procedures ensure that the child does not attend the service without their medication as prescribed are developed.
4) Require the development of a comms plan to ensure that all staff are informed about the meds management plan for the child and a child parent can communicate any changes that need to be made to the plan.
d) The medical conditions policy must set out practices in relation to self administration of medication by children over pre-school age if the service permits.
- The practice must include the recording of any self administered medication

A

1) The approved provider must ensure that medication is not administered to a child unless
a) that administration is authorised
b) its in accordance with reg 95 & 96
2) Written notice must be given to the parents as soon as possible if medication is administered to the child
3) Authorisation to administer medication is allowed if it is recorded in the medication record for that child or in the case of an emergency, is given verbally by a parent or authorised person or a registered medical practitioner or and emergency service.

A

1) The medication must be administered only if its been prescribed by a doctor, its in its original container with the original label with the child’s name on it and it must not be out of date.
2) the medication must be given as per the instructions on the label or as instructed by the doctor.
3) A witness must check the dosage administered and the identity of the child.

A

Over pre school age may self-administer if an authorisation is recorded in the medication record and the service has self administrations policies.

97 : Emergency and evacuation procedures

A

1) The emergency and evacuations procedures must set out
- Instruction for what must be done in the event
- An emergency and evacuation floor plan
2) The approved provider must ensure that a risk assessment is conducted to identify potential emergencies.
3) The approved provider must ensure that procedures are rehearsed every 3 months with staff volunteer’s and children present and the rehearsals are documented.
4) Emergency and evacuation floor plans must be displayed near every exit.

A

The approved provider must ensure that the staff have access to an operating phone or similar means of comms to enable immediate communication to and from parents and emergency services.

99 : Children leaving the education and care service premises.

A

The approved provider must ensure that any child does not leave the premises except:

a) is given to the parent, authorised nominee
b) leaves the premises as per the written authorisation of the child’s parent or nominee
c) Is taken to an excursion in accordance with this Division.
d) Is given into the care of a person or taken outside of the premises for medical or emergency treatment.

100: Risk assessment must be conducted before excursion

A

The approved provider must ensure that a risk assessment is carried out before an authorisation is sought for an excursion.

Exceptions:

  • The excursion is a regular outing
  • A risk assessment already conducted not more that 12 months before.

101 : Conduct of risk assessment for excursion

A

The risk assessment must identify risks to the safety, health or wellbeing of any child and specify how the risks will be managed.
Considerations include:
1) The rout and destination
2) any water hazards
3) risks associated with water based activities
4) transportation means, seatbelts or safety restraints, process of entering and exiting your premises and the locations and entering and exiting the vehicle and how each child will be accounted for.
5) the number of adults and children involved
6) The number of educators or responsible adults required to supervise and whether any specialised skills are required.
7) The proposed activities
8) The duration
9) The items that need to be taken to the excursion

102 : Authorisation for excursions

A

Children are not to be taken on excursion unless authorised by a parent and the authority must state:

1) The child’s name
2) The reason the child is to be taken
3) If its a regular outing, a description of when they will be taken on the regular outings if not, the date of the outing
4) A description of the destination.
5) The means of transport and required safety restraints of the transport
6) The proposed activities
7) The period that the child will be away
8) How many children will be attending
9) Educator ratios
10) Other staff or adults who will accompany and supervise

A

The AP and NS must ensure a risk assessment is conducted before an authorisation is sought to transport a child unless its a regular transport and a risk assessment has been conducted within the previous 12 months.

The service must identify and assess risks that transporting the child may pose a risk to the safety, health or wellbeing of the child.

A

The approved provider and the nominated supervisor must ensure children are not transported unless written authorisation has been given by the parent or other person named in the child’s enrolment record and it must state:

1) The child’s name
2) The reason the child is to be transported
3) For regular transports, a description of when
4) For unregular, the date’
5) the proposed pick up and destination
6) the means of transport
7) the period of time of the transport
8) The number of children
9) The number of staff and other adults who will supervise
10) Requirements for seat belts and safety restraints
11) That a risk assessment has been prepared
12) That the written policies and procedures are available at the premises
