Qualitative analysis, direct and constraints based coaching Flashcards
What are the four tasks of qualitative analysis
Preparation, Observation, Evaluation ad Error correction
What stage is preparation and describe its parts
stage one
1. CRITICAL FEATURES OF A SKILL: what does the skill look like, eg grip > stance > starting point etc
2. KNOW YOUR ATHLETE: strengths + weaknesses, age, gender, stage of learning, injuries
3. DETAILS OF OBSERVATION: digital or live, vantage point, how many cameras, what angle etc
4. EFFECTIVE INSTRUTION: type of instructions and feedback vary on different stages of learning
What stage is observation and describe its parts
Stage 2
direct observation or digital recording. Recording or measuring a skill
What stage is evaluation and describe its parts
Stage 3
used to identify errors or positive aspects of the performance. Ranks critical features on a scale
inadequate___________________adequate ->
knowledge of performace
What stage is error correction and describe its parts
Stage 4
MODIFY PRACTICE: part or whole practice, open or closed environment, massed or distributed practice, blocked or random practice
EXAGGERATION OF OVERCOMPENSATION: over exaggerate certain aspects of a skill to emphasise technique
VISUAL MODEL: instructor demonstrates or shows footage of correct technique
MANUEL GUIDENCE: instructor moves body parts through correct technique
What is direct coaching
where the coach makes all the decisions eg selection and practice tasks, how tasks will be performed, progressed and refilled, learner has limited need to make decisions and think
3 advantages of direct coaching
-usually blocked practice
- effective for learning FMS
-external cues are liminited
3 disadvantages of direct coaching
- skills taught in isolation
- skills dont transfer effectively
- tactics and strategy not developed
What is constraints based coaching
delivered via the coach putting in individual, environmental and task constraints which focus on improvement (movement patterns, decision making, proprioception)
3 advantages of constraints based coaching
- taught in a more open environment
- tactics and strategies are developed
-greater skill transfer
3 disadvantages of constraints based coaching
- not textbook technique
- skills may take longer to master
-more suited to autonomous learners
Describe individual constraints and provide 3 examples
physical, psychological and behavioral factors that are internal to the performer
eg genetic (body size and height
fitness level (agility, speed, power)
injury
mental skills (attention, confidence)
Describe environmental (physical and social) constraints and provide 3 examples
The type of environmental setting and characteristics of where the performance takes place. Constraints put in place to simulate playing or match environment
eg climate, lightning, surface
geography
coaches influence
Describe task constraints and provide 3 examples and 2 benefits
factors closely related to performance
eg rules of the sport
modification of equipment eg bats, balls
court and field dimensions
BENEFITS: reduces the predictability of environment
- fewer external cues and player can control the timing of the skill
