What is the main intentions qualitative analysis (thematic analysis)
To summarise and impose some kind of order on the data
To ensure that the order represents the participants perspective and does not arise from preconception
Enable themes to be identified and general conclusions drawn
Stages of qualitative analysis/ thematic analysis
Artefact
Read + analyse
Find themes
Make codes
Memo (notes)
What is a content analysis
The analysis of the content of something
Strengths of qualitative data
Represents true complexities of human behaviour - holistic approach
Provides rich details of how people think and behave so higher validity
Weaknesses of qualitative data
More difficult to detect patterns + draw conclusions due to huge amounts of variety in data
Interpreting what people mean is subjective so lowers credibility
What do researchers have to acknowledge with Qualitative analysis
Subjectivity
How is deception reduced in the qualitative approach
Participants are involved and the effects of their expectations are acknowledged
What does the qualitative approach start with and then lead to
Starts from specific observations which then lead to the detection of patterns and ultimately theories
What is qualitative data
Descriptive data using words
