Describe the standard pre-action system as it exists on campus to include:
Power Supplies – Dual fed. ATS (fed off the G pnl)
Water Flow Path – Water entry room (L151), PBB pipes, pre-action, suites
Valve Isolation Points – Water entry room and pre-actions
Alarming Set Points – Tamper, high/low pressure alarm (10 psi), Blast Off
Types of Fires and Proper Extinguishing Agents
A: General combustions (Ash)
B: Liquids (Boils)
C: Electrical (Charge)
D: Metals (Drill)
K: Kitchen/Grease (Kitchen)
Maintenace Scope of Work
Simulate air loss, check switches, and close isolation valves
Maintenance Periodicity
Quarterly: Test tampers and bring in low supervisory
Annually: Cycle deluge valve, alongside quarterly testing
What is the difference between cross zone and cross detection?
Cross Zone (underfloor): HSO Activation. Prevents false alarms. Smoke in different zones needed.
Cross Detection (ceiling): Requires 2 with same zone and pressure loss (2 factor authentication) dual interlock.
Describe the underfloor smoke detection disabling procedure. How does this differ between properties?
Call BFPE (T/S), disarm HSO by turning key, acknowledge the supervisory alarm.
Different buildings have different building codes and some don’t have HSO’s.
Where is the Life Safety Building Account and Passcode spreadsheet published?
I: Drive – Fire Folder
Describe the Fire System response to 2 underfloor cross zoned smoke detectors.
HSO relay is activated (shut trip) and breakers in electric room will all trip, CRAC’s will all shut down/off HVAC s/d override goes off.
What indications would be available to the roving Facility Engineer with one ceiling smoke head activated within a suite?
BMS alarm, light on panel will light up for location of ceiling smoke head, alarm on fire panel in suite, alarm will sound off.
What should be observed prior to placing a Suite HSO inhibit key switch from inhibit to enable?
All work is complete, no alarm indications, all is normal
Explain how the Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus works and where on campus is this located?
M Building
VESDA: Sucks in air from the protected environment via purpose built aspirating pipe and fitting also samples the quantity of air passing through the VESDA detection laser chamber.
Explain the differences between Trouble/Supervisory/Alarms.
Trouble: system/component issue
Supervisory: Change of state in system
Alarm: Sensor triggered
