Q

Describe the generator system in detail to include the following:

A

66 generators for building; 16 cylinders in each generator; no spark plugs, 4-pole generator

          Basic component identification

Fuel System, Alternator, Engine, Battery Charger, Control Panel, Coolant System, Oil System

           Internal Combustion Engine

Q

What actions will a Facility Engineer take if the suite goes on generator?

A

Engineer will be sent down by the lead to the effected electrical room to confirm the breaker closed for the generator and the utility opened and is supplying proper voltage. Check generator and take logs every 15 minutes. Report fuel rates and figure how long the generator can run and investigate the cause of the generator starting. Record the time and what has been done as well as the affected suite.

Q

How many gallons of fuel do we maintain in each generator at full capacity? What percentage of the overall above ground storage tank capacity do we maintain in each tank? If asked for a thumb rule, approximately how many gallons of fuel are there in each inch of fuel in an average AST on campus?

A

House Gen 1 – 1,000 gallons

House Gen 2 – 2,000 gallons

Most - 5,900 gallons

Customer Red – 10,900 gallons

90%

75 gallons per inch

Q

Describe the importance of the generator enclosure dampers. What immediate actions are necessary if they fail to open during a generator load test?

A

Airflow, prevent overheating

Open the doors if you are able, if not, monitor closely and secure if necessary

Dampers fail open so if they don’t open it’s possible to manually open them.
