A
- scarcity of land after population boom left the peasants forced to become tenant farmers
- lived in houses of mud walls and dirt floors
- worked long hours of rigorous labour
- poverty and debt prevented social advancement
- life expectancy was only 25 years

Who were the Mandarins?
A
Shenshi who worked for the government after sitting Confucian Exams and dominated political life in China- out of touch with most of the population

A
Poorly. They were the bottom of the social hierarchy living in a patriarchal society.
