How to add commas to numbers
- Click “123” button
- Click “Numbers”
How to get rid of decimals from numbers
Click “.0” button that says “Decrease decimal places” and click it for however many decimal places you want to eliminate
How to sort a column alphabetically
- Select one cell in the column
- Click “Data”
- Click “Sort sheet by column X, A to Z”
How to anchor the Header row
- Click “View”
- Click “Freeze”
- Click “1 row”
How to get the sum of a column
- Type =SUM(X2:X7)
How to get the same formula in another cell
Copy and paste because of relative cell reference
How to calculate mean
Type “=average(X2:E7)”
How to calculate median
Type “=median(X2:X7)”
Relative cell reference
Lets us know that the formula is going to change relative to its position when you copy and paste
Shortcut instead of copy and pasting formulas into each cell
- Double click the blue square at the bottom right of the cell
- Or drag and select each column you want this for, and double click the square
Absolute cell reference
- How much as a percent each person is getting
- Percent of a whole
How to calculate percent of a whole
- Portion/Whole
- X2/X7
- “Per” means divide
How to make numbers show up as percentages
Click “%” button
How to anchor a certain part of a formula
- Add dollar signs to the part you want to stay the same
Ex: “X2/$X$2”
How to calculate percent change
- (New - Old) / Old
- Type “(X2-Z2)/Z2”
How to filter by places with at least 500,000 people in it
- Click 3 dots for “More”
- Click filter icon
- Click the column you want to filter
- Click “Filter by condition”
- Click “Greater than or equal to”
- Type 500,000
How to turn off filter
Just click the filter icon again
How to copy everything
Click gray square in the upper left and Command+C
How to tighten up all columns
- Drag and select all the columns
- Double click the line between any 2 of the columns
How to calculate rate
- Total per X amount of people
- AKA Total divided by Population, times 10,000 people
Ex: Type “=(X2/Z2)*10,000
