Ventilation is the controlled removal of heated air smoke and other flammable gases from the structure and their replacement with supply of cool fresh air.

- Improved conditions for the survivability of the building occupants.
- Improved conditions for firefighters
- Reduced potential for rapid fire development.
- Restricted smoke and fire damage to the property.
You are at a large single story building fire and the IC has given you the task to locate an outlet vent on the leeward side of the building. How would you go about this task and why might you have been asked to perform the task?
Horizontal ventilation
1. Using doors and windows in external walls.
2. Outlet vent on leeward side as high as possible and smaller than inlet.
3. Inlet vent on windward side of building as low as possible.
4. Covering jet in place to prevent re ignition and to cool gases.
Been used to do this for the benefits it provides.
