Pyruvate Oxidation Flashcards
1
Q
Pyruvate Oxidation
A
Aerobic process (not direct reactant, but cannot occur without oxygen)
1
Q
Before Reactions
A
First, 2 pyruvates transported to mitochondrial matrix from cytoplasm, then a multi-enzyme complex catalyzes reactions
2
Q
Process
A
A carboxyl group is removed by decarboxylase, producing CO2 waste, then 2-C molecule is oxidized by a NAD+ (producing NADH), creating acetic acid. Finally, sulfur-containing coenzyme A is added, producing Acetyl-CoA.
3
Q
Acetyl-CoA
A
If energy needed, goes into Kreb’s Cycle to produce ATP; if energy not needed, goes to produce fat
