Kreb’s Cycle / Citric Acid Cycle

A

Occurs in matrix, is aerobic (not direct reactant, but cannot occur without oxygen) –> by end, entire glucose molecules is consumed: all 6 Cs end up as CO2

Q

Process

A

Oxaloacetate combines with Acetyl-CoA to produce CoA and citrate. A CO2 is removed from citrate and NAD+ gets reduced from citrate (producing NADH); both happen twice. A Pi joins on end of molecule which GDP steals off to become GTP, then ADP steals Pi off GTP to produce ATP (GTP reverts back to GDP). Then, molecule is oxidized by FAD (producing FADH2). Finally, H2O is added, rearranging, and molecule is oxidized final time by NAD+ to produce oxaloacetate again.
