Chloroplast and Photoexcitation Flashcards
Excitation
Absorption of energy by electrons (go from ground state to excited state)
Fluorescence
Rapid loss of energy in form of light (chlorophyll molecules do not fluoresce because excited electrons get captured by primary acceptor)
Photosystem
Complex of chlorophyll molecules, accessory pigments, and proteins in the thylakoid membrane
Photosystem: Antenna Complex
Number of chlorophyll molecules and accessory pigments that absorbs photon & transfer energy from pigment to pigment until it reaches the reaction center
Photosystem: Reaction Center
Complex containing chlorophyll-a whose electrons absorb light energy - when energy reaches chlorophyll-a, its electrons raised to higher energy level then transferred to primary electron acceptor
Chloroplast Parts
Inner and outer membrane, intermembrane space, stroma, thylakoid, granum, lamella, thylakoid space (lumen), thylakoid membrane
