Pyruvate Alternatives Flashcards
1
Q
Lactic Acid Fermentation
A
Pyruvate is reduced to lactate when no O2 (Exercising, flight or flight, ect..)
2
Q
Pyruvate to lactate
A
Lactate dehydrogenase
3
Q
Alcohol Fermentation
A
Pyruvate to ethanol and CO2
4
Q
Pyruvate to ethanol and CO2
A
Only in yeast and some bacteria
5
Q
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency(PKDef)
A
Autosomal recessive disease shortening lifespan of RBC’s by limiting last step of glycolysis. Leads to hemolytic anemia.
Common in: Beagle, Cairn Terrier, Pug, West Highland White Terrier
6
Q
Glycolysis Associated Anemia
A
RBCs depend on glycolysis for energy and when energy needs not met, they lyse. This creates hemolytic anemia.
