What is the definition of a Pyrogen Reaction?
A
o Elevated temperature- usually occurs 45-75 minutes into tx

Cause?
A
o Pyrogens such as endotoxin

Symptoms?
A
o Chills, shaking, fever, hypotension, vomiting, muscle pain

Intervention?
A
o Provide support, report pt. s/s to nurse, discontinue dialysis, notify physician, do not return blood, draw samples for culture and endotoxin per P&P and sequester all medical supplies (including disposables) used for the dialysis treatment per P&P.

Prevention?
A
o Proper water treatment and disinfection of equipment
o Proper preparation of dialysate
o Proper machine set-up and priming
