Pure substances, mixtures and separations Flashcards
What is a pure substance
A pure substance is made up of a single type of material only
Defined the term element
An element is a pure substance that contains only one atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by using any ordinary physical or chemical processes.
6.Properties of metals
They usually have high melting and boiling points they are solid at room temperature(expect mercury) they appear shiny their density is usually high they are good conductors
Properties of nonmetals
They usually have low melting and boiling points they can be solid, liquid or gas at room temperature they are brittle their density is usually low and they poor conductors of heat and electricity(expect graphite)
What is a compound
A compound is a pure substance that is formed from two or more different types of elements which are chemically bonded together in fixed proportion and in a way that their properties have changed
What is a mixture
contains more than one substance a component and each component retains its own independent properties and has undergone no chemical reaction.
What is a homogeneous mixture
Mixture that is uniform and has the same composition and properties throughout the mixture therefore it is impossible to tell the components apart on solutions homogeneous mixtures
What is a heterogeneous mixture
A mixture that is not uniformed and it is possible to distinguish the components apart from each other heterogeneous mixtures includes suspensions and colloids
What is a solution
A homogeneous mixture made up of a solute and solvent
What is a solute
A substance which is dissolved
What is a solvent
A substance which does the dissolving
What is a suspension
A heterogeneous mixture where solutes do not dissolve or particularly dissolved in the solvent
What is a colloid
Heterogeneous mixture in which small particles of one substance is dispersed in another substance
