• A colon says ‘Here’s what I mean’ or ‘here comes some information
e.g. You will need the following: paper, pencils, scissors and tape.
• It can also add emphasis to a particular word or phrase
e.g. He got what he worked so hard for: a promotion.
Where can you use a semicolon ; and how?
• Sometimes thought of as a ‘weak full stop’ it separates two closely related independent clauses.
e.g. My friend loves tea; I prefer coffee.
• Used to separate longer items in a list
e.g. The resort offers many activities: water-skiing
on the lake; the high ropes course in the woods;
mountain biking around the whole site and much
more.
