pulse oximetry Flashcards
1
Q
pulse oximetry
A
it can tells us the amount of oxygen that is bound to hemoglobin. uses photospectometry of light absorption
Used to determine oxy and deoxygenated hemoglobins only. relies on the arterial blood, only measures during the pulse which is the systolic phase.
2
Q
two lights on pulse oximetry
A
- red- measure deoxygenated hb
-infrared is for oxygenated hb
Ratios between the amplitude of the two plethysmographic waveforms are converted into an arterial oxygen saturation……that’s what’s reported.
3
Q
what can affect the results of a pulse oximeter
A
if the light and receptor light is not on opposite sides
ambient light can also affected
artificial and painted fingernails (dyes and pigments)
dyshemoglobins- co binds to hb from fires
methemoglobin- from well water
Low perfusion
motion artifact could be cause by disease
