cold neb Flashcards
cold neb should be filled with
distilled water and 0.45% saline
when will it have higher flow
The lower the FiO2 selected, the greater the size of the entrainment port and subsequently the greater the flow.
how does the cold neb provide humidity
Through evaporation of the nebulized particles and though gravity and inertial dependent rain out and deposition.
what is the min volume of fluid needed in the SVN (small volume neb)
May consider diluting volume of drug with saline if volume is too small. Ideal volume is around 5ml. nebulization occurs during inhalation and exhalation. Inhalation is less than 40% of the respiratory cycle therefore 60% of the emitted aerosol is lost to the atmosphere. Increasing the volume in the SVN allows a greater proportion of the active medication to be nebulized and inhaled.
why is MDI delivery preferred over SVN for med delivery ?
Smaller particle size and better deposition. less oral deposition, quick, lower infection risk
oxygen
Common use:
Treatment of hypoxia
Power source for nebs and ventilators
Gas for humidity therapy
Properties:
Makes up 20.9% of the earth’s atmosphere
Becomes a liquid at -183 C
Non-flammable but readily supports combustion
medical air
Cylinder Colour:
Black and white (yellow in USA)
Common use:
Power for nebs and ventilators
Gas for humidity therapy
Properties:
Contains 20.9% oxygen and 78% nitrogen
becomes liquid at -195.6
helium
brown cylinder
-Used in pulmonary function testing to test residual volume and diffusing capacity
no color, odor or taste
heliox
Relieve WOB in airway obstruction
Aerosol medication delivery for status asthmaticus
(example a kid swallows a coin or has a tumor)
CO2
grey cylinder
Cylinder Colour:
Grey
Common use:
Treatment of hiccups (carbogen)
Calibration of equipment
Properties: Colorless, odorless gas Byproduct of combustion Waste gas produced by the body Acts as a weak acid in the body due to the henderson hasselbeck equation
nitric oxide (NO)
light blue cylinder
Treatment of pulmonary hypertension (dilates pulmonary vessels)
Treatment of right heart failure
nitrous oxide (N2O)/ entonox
cylinder color dark blue
Inhaled gas for analgesia-anaesthesia
Known as laughing gas
