Why would you do a pulpotomy?
It avoids extraction which in turn:
- avoids loss of space
- avoids loss of mastication
- prevents speech issues
What may be a contraindication of a pulpotomy?
Poor patient cooperation
Advanced root resorption
Heart defects
Recurrent pain or infection
Many gross carious teeth
When would a pulpotomy be considered?
Carious or traumatic pulpal exposure
What is the process of a pulpotomy?
Excavate tooth and remove the pulp with round bur or sterile excavator
Place cotton pledjet with ferric sulphate to help achieve haemostasis
Then finish with ZOE gel and a metal crown
During surgery what may influence your decision on a pulpotomy?
Crimson dark red continuous bleeding indicates inflamed pulp and a pulpectomy is needed
Normal red blood with good haemostasis indicates pulpotomy sufficient
