How can communication be altered?
Treat them as individuals, use name and ask them questions
Lower yourself physically in height
If patient interested, jargon can help
What is dental fear vs anxiety
Anxiety is reaction to unknown danger or treatment
Fear is reaction to previous known treatment
What non pharmacological ways can paeds patients be made to feel more comfortable
Preparatory info - e.g. use slow speed on fingernail first
Enhanced control - let patient choose what they want done first - make them think they in control
Tell, show do
Behaviour shaping - smiles, positive voices and reinforcement
Distraction - music, tv, magic light

Contraindications of conscious sedation?
Unwilling to cooperate / do not consent
Unaccompanied pts
ASAIII+ in secondary care only
Severe learning difficulties - pt must understand sedation for it to be beneficial
Severe MSK disorders
COPD
Severe psychiatric disorders
Thyroid dysfunction
Pregnancy and lactation
Blocked airway (IS)
Hepatic insufficiency and BZDP allergy (IVS)
