What happens in PE?

A

Blockage of part of the pulmonary arterial tree as a result of embolism of blood clot (thrombosis)
Impaired perfusion of alveoli/lungs resulting in low oxygen levels in blood

What causes PE?

A

Source of thrombus usually DVT
Patient immobile
Valsalva manoeuvre

What are the symptoms of PE?

A

Sudden-onset dyspnea
Tachypnoea
Chest pain of a pleuritic nature (worsened by breathing)
Cough and haemoptysis

A
Cyanosis 
Collapse 
Circulatory instability 
Pleural friction rub noise 
Pleural Effusion

A

Oxygen sats- low
Arterial Blood Gases - O2 low
CT scan- shows blood clot

A

High flow O2
