What happens in PE?
A
Blockage of part of the pulmonary arterial tree as a result of embolism of blood clot (thrombosis)
Impaired perfusion of alveoli/lungs resulting in low oxygen levels in blood

What causes PE?
A
Source of thrombus usually DVT
Patient immobile
Valsalva manoeuvre

What are the symptoms of PE?
A
Sudden-onset dyspnea
Tachypnoea
Chest pain of a pleuritic nature (worsened by breathing)
Cough and haemoptysis

What are the clinical signs of PE?
A
Cyanosis Collapse Circulatory instability Pleural friction rub noise Pleural Effusion Strain of RV Raised JVP

What tests would be done on someone with PE?
A
Oxygen sats- low
Arterial Blood Gases - O2 low
CT scan- shows blood clot

How is a PE treated?
A
High flow O2
Thrombolytic drugs
Anticoagulants for several months
