AV node cannot transmit electrical impulse from atria to ventricles
Ventricles develop their own pacemaker and contract independently and slower than atria
Who is most likely to get complete heart block?
Elderly patient who may have had previous MI, be taking a beta-blocker or who is on rate lowering drugs
What symptoms are associated with complete heart block that presents gradually?
Tiredness/ breathlessness with exercise
What symptoms are associated with complete heart block that presents acutely?
Lightheadedness/ collapse with loss of consciousness
What clinical signs would you see in complete heart block?
HR slow
BP low
Patient may suddenly lose consciousness- Cardiac syncope
How is complete heart block treated?
Paramedics may give atropine
Temporary pacemaker
How is secondary complete heart block prevented?
Permanent pacemaker
