What causes DVT?
A
Blockage of deep vein by blood clot (thrombosis)

What is thrombophilia?
A
Tendency to develop thrombosis
Includes deficiencies in anti-coagulation factors Protein C, Protein S, antithrombin or mutations in the factor V and prothrombin genes.

What are the risk factors for DVT?
A
Patients having surgery or hospitalization Advanced age Obesity Infection Immobilization Hormonal Contraception Smoking Air-travel Family History

What are the symptoms of DVT?
A
Unilateral swelling in calf
Pain in calf
Sudden pulmonary embolus

How is DVT diagnosed?
A
Ultrasound shows absence or reduction of venous flow
D-Dimer levels tested

How is DVT treated?
A
Immediate low molecular weight heparin
3-6 month warfarin
