Causes of tension pneumothorax
Trauma (parenchymal flap) - air in on inspiration but not leaving on expiration
CPR
Mechanical ventilation (due to positive ventilation)
Symptoms and signs of tension pneumothorax
Sudden onset dyspnoea
Pleuritic chest pain
Tracheal deviation away from affected side in TENSION pneumothorax
Reduced expansion
Hyperressonance to percussion
Diminished breathsounds on the affected side
DVT can be calculated using the _____ score
Well’s score
DVT likely: 2 points or more
DVT unlikely: 1 point or less
What is the immediate management if DVT is likely
Proximal leg vein US within 4 hours - if NEG then do D-dimer test
If US cannot be done within 4 hours then do D-dimer test and give LMWH
