PULMONARY EMBOLISM Flashcards
is a common disorder that is related todeep vein thrombosis(DVT).
Pulmonary embolism
refers to theobstructionof the pulmonary artery or one of its branches by athrombusthat originates somewhere in the venous system or in the right side of the heart.
Pulmonary embolism
refers tothrombusformation in the deep veins, usually in the calf or thigh, but sometimes in the arm, especially in patients with peripherally inserted centralcatheters.
Deep vein thrombosis
types of emboli
fat, air,amniotic fluid, and septic.
arecholesterolor fatty substances that may clog the arteries when fatty foods are consumed more.
Fat emboli
emboli that usually come from intravenous devices.
Air emboli.
are emboli caused by the amniotic fluid that has leaked towards the arteries
Amniotic fluid emboli.
emboli that originate from a bacterial invasion of the thrombus.
Septic emboli
Pulmonary embolism is linked to a lot of causes and these are the most common:
Trauma
Surgery
Hypercoagulable states
Prolongedimmobility
Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism
Dyspnea
Chestpain
Tachycardia
Tachypnea
Prevention of PE
Avoid venous stasis
Sequential compression devices
Mechanical prophylaxis
Graduated compression stockings
Anticoagulant therapy
Complications for PE
Cardiogenicshock
Right ventricular failure
Medical Management PE
Anticoagulation therapy
Thrombolytic therapy
Surgical Management PE
Surgical embolectomy
Transvenouscatheterembolectomy
Interrupting thevena cava
