Pulmonary: Breathing Exercises Flashcards
1
Q
Diaphragmatic Breathing
A
- Patient is supine
- Therapist places hand on stomach and subcostal angle and gently
- Therapist applies gentle pressure throughout the exhalation phase
- Increase to firm pressure at the end of exhalation phase
- Patient inhales against therapists resistance
- Progress to independent from therapists hand in upright sitting, standing, walking, and stair climbing
2
Q
Segmental Breathing: Patient population
A
- Patients with perfusion difficulty
- Patients with pulmonary compromise
- Patients who have pleuritic incision or post trauma pain that causes decreased movement of the thorax
- Patients at risk for developing atelectasis
3
Q
Segmental Breathing: Red Flag
A
- Contraindicated with intractable hypoventilation until medical situation is resolved
4
Q
Sustained Maximal Inspiration
A
- Increases inhaled volume
- Sustain or improve alveolar inflation
- Maintain or restore functional residual capacity
5
Q
Sustained Maximal Inspiration: Procedure
A
- Inspire slowly through the nose or pursed lips to maximal inspiration
- Hold maximal inspiration for 3 seconds
- Passively exhale
6
Q
Sustained Maximal Inspiration: Incentive spirometers
A
- Devices that measure and encourage deep inspiration
- Can help patient achieve maximal inspiration
7
Q
Pursed Lip Breathing
A
- Primarily used for patients with obstructive disease who experience dyspnea at rest with minimal activity/exercise or with ineffective breathing patterns during activity/exercise
8
Q
Pursed Lip Breathing: Procedure
A
- Slowly inhale through nose or mouth
- Slowly exhale through mouth in pursed position (like your blowing out candles)
9
Q
Pursed Lip Breathing: Red Flag
A
- Abdominal muscle contraction can be used judiciously to increase exhaled volume
- Care must be taken not to increase intrathoracic pressure which may cause airway collapse
