Pulmonary: Activities for Increasing Functional Abilities Flashcards
1
Q
General Conditioning: Frequency
A
- Frequency: 20-30 min 3/5 days per week, With durations less than 20-30 min exercise should occur more frequently
2
Q
General Conditioning: Intensity
A
- Intensity: Patients with cardio or pulmonary insufficiency will likely reach their cardiovascular or pulmonary end point. Typically Pulmonary end point is reached before cardiovascular. Intensity for these patients should be at near maximal effort.
3
Q
General Conditioning: Time
A
- Duration of 20-30 min first prior to an increase in intensity
- Patients may benefit from an interval exercise program with rest periods for tolerance
4
Q
General Conditioning:Type
A
- Any aerobic activity that allows for graded workload
5
Q
Paced Breathing
A
- Spreads out the metabolic demands of an activity over time by slowing its performance
6
Q
Paced Breathing: Indications
A
- Patients that become dysgenic during the performance of an activity or exercise procedure
7
Q
Paced Breathing: Procedure
A
- Break the activity into parts
- Exhalation during performance of an activity
- Inhalation rest periods
- Example: Stair negotiation:
- Exhale while climbing a stair
- Inhale when on the stair during rest break
- Then repeat
