What was the industrial revolution?
The RAPID development of FACTORIES and increased job PROSPECTS in cities led to many MIGRATING into industrial CITIES
What was a negative effect of the industrial revolution?
To keep up with the demand for houses, Landlords quickly built basic and poorly built homes
Why did landlords build rubbish houses?
They knew the factory workers wouldn’t pay much rent so they kept houses poor in quality
What were courts?
Groups of houses in poor areas were arranged in dark,narrow streets were called courts
How were the living conditions in the industrial towns conditions ?
1 family to a room:50 to a house
How many people shared privies?(wooden seat over a cesspool)
A privy would be used by 100 people
How was the water supply like in industrial towns?
Water collected from a local pump shared by 20-30 families
What killer diseases were around?Prevention?Treatments?
Despite their being a vaccine for small pox little people had access to it

What were the symptoms of chloera?
Diarrhoea, EXTREME vomiting and death by dehydration, muscle spasms

How did the authorities/government deal with cholera?
Because of lack of understanding
=the gov offered prayer days(1848) epidemic
= local authorities suggest smoking tabacoo and burning tar to keep clean
What did Doctor Bakers report on the 1830s cholera epidemic reveal about poorer areas?
Some people collected human waste to sell to farmers, the collection of poo in Leeds took 75 cart loads to remove it
Who was Edwin Chadwick?
(A social reformer) He was involved in workhouses
What did Chadwick do?
Chadwick published a report ‘THE SANITARY CONDITIONS OF THE LABOURING POPULATION’

What did Chadwick’s report suggest?
Spending tax on improving living conditions for the poor =would be more efficient=than letting them become to ill to work= and be supported by the workhouse

Clean water and removal of rubbish/sewage

No it was the cholera epidemic of 1848 which began to affect the upperclassmen but he was a reason

Was the PHA 1848 limited?
Yes, it only lasted for 5 years and ended in 1854
How else was the act limited?
It was optional so local authorities did not have to improve hygiene, HOWEVER leading towns like Manchester improved conditions
What was one other ways improvements in public health were limited in general?
Chadwick was a difficult person ppl did not want to listen to him
and despite over 50,000 dying(1848) attitudes were slow to change,(didn’t want to pay taxes to help the poor)
PLUS no PROVEN link between disease and hygiene
