JOHN SNOW 1850S Flashcards
What epidemic helped change peoples attitudes in the 1850s?
The 1854 epidemic
What had Dr John Snow suggested?
Snow suggested in 1849 that cholera was being spread by polluted water,
Where did the cholera epidemic of 1854 take place?
Soho, London
So what did Snow do in response to the outbreak in Soho?
He mapped out ALL the deaths in the area and found the deaths CENTRED around the pump in BROAD STREET
What made made Snows work convincing?
He explained why people living close to the pump
= Did not catch cholera
and why ppl leaving far from the pump caught cholera
What evidence made made Snows work convincing?
A woman leaving all the way in Hampstead died of cholera because she DID live in Soho and had been getting water sent from the BSP to her because she liked the way it tasted
What OTHER evidence made made Snows work convincing?
Workers at a local BREWERY had not been badly affected
because= they drank FREE BEER and had their OWN WATER SUPPLY
What was the major thing that support Snow’s theory?
When he removed the handle of the pump the deaths from cholera stopped thus proving the link between contaminated water and cholera
What was found to be the cause of the cholera outbreak??
Reverend Whitehead’s findings LINKING cholera to its 1st victim,
—–) revealed that contaminated water from a cesspool had LEAKED into the BSP
What was the direct impact of Snows work?
Proved the link between contaminated water and cholera , pressurising water companies and goverment to improve water supplies
Overall what was the impact of Snow?
His scientific approach in careful observation and mapping PROVED the link between contaminated water and cholera
HOWEVER ppl did not yet understand the link between MICROBES AND DISEASE
.(It did not prove the link between microbes and siaseas and the cause of other diseases)
Did Snow ‘s work lead to any reform?
Despite his link between contaminated water and cholera not much changes had been done to public health till 1858.(the) great stink)
