1A (ROBERT KOCH 1870S) (Pasteur) Flashcards
What had changed during the 1870s regarding attitudes of the medical field?
Pasteur’s ideas were more accepted but had little impact on medicine (despite Lister’s work proving his ideas)
What was the general consensus in the medical community in the 1870s?
The link of Lister’s and Pasteur’s work to disease was not clearly understood
Who was Robert Koch?
A German scientist, who had read Pasteur’s work
What did Robert Koch do in 1872?
Koch developed many ways of using chemical dyes to stain specific bacteria to study them easier
What did Robert Koch do in 1878?
Koch and his group of scientist funded by the German GOV Koch identified the microbe that caused anthrax in SHEEP
Why was Koch’s work in 1878 a break through?
It was the FIRST time that a SPECIFIC microbe had been identified that caused a SPECIFIC disease
What did Koch continue to do after his major break through of 1878?
Using the same methods he identified the microbe that caused BLOOD POISONING in 1878,
THEN 4 years later the TUBERCULOSIS microbe
What did Koch’s work inspire in the 1880s?
other scientists used Koch’s methods and then quickly identified some other pathogens
Name 1 pathogen discovered by other microbes?
1883
However how was the work of Koch and these other scientists limited?
identifying the pathogens did not mean prevention was available
