JOSEPH LISTER:(1861) Flashcards
Who was Joseph Lister?
A SURGEON AT THE GLASGOW ROYAL INFIRMARY
Who was Lister’s ideas inspired by?
He read Pasteur’s work
What was Lister’s ideas were based on?
He discovered CARBOLIC ACID was used to treat sewers, which smelt like infected wounds,
How did Lister connect PASTEUR’S GERM THEORY with the carbolic acid being used treat sewers?
He realised that the carbolic acid was killing the microbe responsible for disease and smell= so he wondered if CA could be used to prevent infection
Who did Lister test his ideas on?
11 y/o David Greenlees who had a broken leg 🦵
What would have been the usual treatment of Greenlees?
Amputation
How did Lister treat Greenlees?
He covered the wound in bandages soaked in a solution of CARBOLIC ACID
What was the result of LISTER’S experiment?
The wound healed without infection
What did Lister begin to do after his successful operation?
He began to use a solution of CA on clean wounds and equipment
What was the impact of Lister’s work?
The death rate in his ward dropped from 45%-15%
What was this technique called?
Anti sepsis(infection)
What ELSE did Lister develop?
CARBOLIC SPRAY- to make sure no microbes could enter the wound
What was 1 of the opposition Lister faced?
The CARBOLIC SPRAY made surgical instruments slippery which slowed down the operation=(BLOOD WAS STILL A PROBLEM)
What was 2nd of the opposition Lister faced?
Some doctors tried Lister’s techniques=but did not do them properly=so they thought it was ineffective.
What was 3rd of the opposition Lister faced?
Doctors did not even accept Pasteur’s work so they saw no use for antiseptic techniques
