An early Egyptian tomb with a flat rectangular shape
Mastaba
a stone coffin (usually bearing sculpture or inscriptions) especially made in Egyptian period
Sarcophagus
the supposed spiritual part of an individual human being being or god, which survived (with the soul) in the afterlife and could reside in a statue of the person
Ka
Small sealed room housing the ka statue of the deceased
Serdab
a large burial complex. “City of the dead”
Necropolis
papyrus scrolls containing magical texts or spells to help the dead survive and pass the tests
Book of the Dead
a monumental gateway to an ancient Egyptian temple formed by two truncated pyramidal towers
Pylon
having a roof supported by pillars, typically in several rows
Hypostyle
A tall, four-sided stone shaft, hewn from a single block, that tapers at the top and is completed by a pyramidion. A sun symbol erected by the ancient Egyptians in ceremonial spaces (such as entrances to temple complexes). Today used as a commemorative monument
Obelisk
a column used by the peoples of Crete at Knossos that starts wider on the top and narrows down as it goes down
Minoan Column
a technique of hammering metal from the back to create a protruding image. Elaborate reliefs are created with wooden armatures against which the metal sheets are pressed and hammered
Repoussé
the bottom, supporting structure, of a column
Base
the sculpted block that tops a column. According to the conventions of the Classical orders, capitals include specific decorative elements. A historiated capital is one displaying human figures or narrative scenes
Capital
a spiral scroll, as seen on an Ionic capital
Volute
in the Classical orders, the horizontal elements above the columns and capitals. It consists of, from top to bottom, a cornice, frieze, and architrave
