Psychodynamic therapy
- Process includes bringing awareness to unconscious, reenacting problematic relationship with therapist, working through this pattern and development of the new interpersonal patterns
- Efficacious for depression but not effective for psychotic disorders
Humanistic therapy
Emphasize the development of human potential
- Believe that human nature is basically positive
- Stresses importance of assuming responsibility of our lives and living in the present
Person – centred therapy
Developed by Carl Rogers
- centres on the clients goals and ways of solving problems
- Therapist must be authentic and genuine, express unconditional positive regard and show empathy and understanding
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
- Claims that how people think behave and feel are all strongly related
- Changing cognition and behaviours
Group therapy
Refers to therapies that three more than one person at a time
Operating procedures
Applied behavioural analysis procedures to treat children with autism
Bio medical treatments
Attempts to alter the brains chemistry or physiology to treat psychological disorders
Electro convulsive therapy (ECT)
Involves applying brief electrical current to the brain
Mindfulness
A meditation technique that comes from Zen Buddhism and other contemplative traditions
Exposure therapy
a type of CBT that goes beyond just cognitive challenging to behaviourally confronting fears
