Generalized anxiety disorder
– Excessive anxiety and worry (Apprehensive expectation) that occurs more often than not for at least six months about various activities and events

– More common in Western societies and women
Usually appears in childhood/adolescence
Phobic disorder
Persistent fears of specific objects or situations
-Most prevalent type of anxiety disorder
- When exposed to the object/situation, several immediately feels fear
– More common in women than men
Panic disorder

Social anxiety disorder

Post – Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
– Exposure to an event that leads to feelings of fear, helplessness or horror
- person continues to re-experience event through memories, flashbacks and nightmares
- Emotional numbing and interpersonal problems are common

Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD)
Many people present this disorder w cleaning, washing and checking rituals
Treated with exposure therapy, serotonin related drugs, and response prevention therapies
Tends to be chronic
50-50 difference between men and women
Unipolar depression
Symptoms include sad or depressed mood loss of interest, change in activity levels, poor appetite or weight loss, decreased energy or fatigue, negative self worth and self blame, etc.
-Women are more likely to develop this than men
85% with cover from this without treatment
Bipolar disorder
Cycling between depressed and manic states
Has two subtypes
Dissociative identity disorder
Used to be called multiple personality disorder
-Development of two or more personalities
Dash which personality make me take over at any given time but there appears to be a primary or host personality
Schizophrenia
– Kraeplin was the first to talk about this disorder which he called dementia praecox
-Comes from the word split and mind
-increases risk of suicide and physical illness
-Causes psychosis
Equal prevalence Between men and women but onset is earlier for men
Borderline personality disorder
Instability in relationships and identity
– excessive reactivity to real or imagined abandonment
– Block of clear or coherent understanding of self and others
-Experiences feelings of abandonment rejection and emptiness when faced with being alone
