What is psychosis?
an umbrella term that covers a range of conditions including schizophrenia
What are psychotic disorders?
delusions, hallucinations, disorganised thinking, negative symptoms
What are delusions?
fixed beliefs that do not change even when a person has conflicting evidence
What are hallucinations?
involuntary, clear perceptions that occur without an external stimulus
What is disorganised thinking?
answers do not relate to the question, speech is jumbled, communication is inhibited
What are positive symptoms?
symptoms of excess distortion such as delusions
What are negative symptoms?
diminished emotional expression, reduced motivation, diminished experience of pleasure
What percentage of the population does schizophrenia affect?
1%
What is the ratio of schizophrenia diagnoses between men and women?
1.4:1
What percentage of schizophrenia diagnoses are suicidal?
50%
What is the treatment for schizophrenia?
CBT, family therapy, antipsychotics
What are the biological risks to schizophrenia?
changes to glutamine and dopamine neurotransmissions, enlarged brain ventricles, decrease in brain size and less connectivity in the white matter
