What is OCD?
obsessive compulsive disorder
What is the diagnostic criteria for OCD?
obsessions and compulsions, time consuming, impairs functioning, not due to medical condition or substance abuse
What is an obsession?
recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images that can cause anxiety
Examples of obsessions
contamination, injury, pathological doubt, symmetry, religious and unacceptable sex
What is a compulsion?
repetitive behaviours or mental acts that the individual feels compelled to do in response to an obsession
What is the onset for OCD?
late adolescence to early adulthood
What is the time course for OCD?
increases gradually and becomes chronic if untreated
What is the gender difference in OCD?
women have more cleaning and washing rituals
What percentage of the population has OCD?
1-2%
