Mood or anxiety symptoms that occur during pregnancy or up to one year postpartum
Postpartum depression is the #1 complication of childbirth, estimates range from affecting 1 in 5 to 1 in 8 women
Untreated mental health issues have negative impact on women infant and family
Distinguishing blues from depression
Blues- duration of symptoms <2 weeks, mild symptoms, self-limited , little to no intervention needed
Depression- criteria for major depressive episode need to be met, duration of symptoms>2 weeks, tends to have a longer/later symptoms, severe symptoms: anhedonia, sense of failure, suicidality, psychosis, impacts functioning

Pre0 existing personal or family mental health history, especially if medication discontinued, lack of or limited social support, low SES, childhood adversity, negative life events, intimate partner violence, unplanned pregnnacy, high risk pregnancy, difficult labor complications (NICU, preterm, birth defect)
