Psychosexual Development (Freud) Flashcards
How many stages are in Freud’s psychosexual development theory?
5 Stages
oral, anal, phallic, latency, gential
Which stages are crucial for personality development?
First 3 stages are crucial for personality development
-important not to receive too little/too much gratification or else risk of FIXATION
What negatives happen if needs not met during the Oral Stage? (feeding is main source of pleasure in this stage)
may grow up to be nail biters or smokers
What if a fixation happens during the ANAL stage? (e.g. extremely strict toilet training)
-may be obsessively clean
-rigidly tied to schedules & routines
OR
-defiantly messy
What are the two complexes that can happen during the PHALLIC stage?
Oedipus/ Electra complexes
- boys develop sexual attachment to mothers
- girls to fathers
- aggressive urges towards same sex parent (rival)
What stage comes after the Phallic stage?
The Latency Stage
- children resolve anxieties and move into middle childhood
- period of relative emotional calm
- intellectual & social exploration
- redirected sexual energy into other pursuits (school work, relationships, hobbies)
What is the last stage? (lasts throughout adulthood)
The Genital Stage
-repressed sexual urges are resurfaced and flow in socially approved channels (heterosexual relations with persons outside the family of origin)
Importance of psychosexual development theory
- aware of unconscious thoughts, feelings, and motivations
- role of childhood experiences in forming personality
STAGE 1: ORAL (birth to one years old)
Baby’s chief source of pleasure involves mouth-oriented activities (sucking and feeding)
STAGE 2: ANAL (1-3 years old)
Sensual gratification from withholding and expelling feces.
- zone of gratification is anal region
- toilet training is an important activity!!!
STAGE 3: PHALLIC (3-6 years old)
Odepius/ Electra complexes
- child becomes attached to parent of opposite sex
- later identifies with same-sex parent
- superego develops
- zone of gratification shifts from anal to genital region
STAGE 4: LATENCY (6 years to puberty)
Time of relative calm between more turbulent stages
-sexual energy redirected into hobbies, relationships, and school work
5) GENITAL STAGE (puberty through adulthood)
