Psychology Unit 2:Biological basis of behaviors Flashcards
Part 3: Parts of the Brain
Cerebellum’s function
coordinate muscle movements, maintain posture and balance
What does the brainstem act as
a relay center(receives and sends off) connecting the cerebellum to the spinal cord
What is the limbic system
Part of the brain involved in our behavioral and emotional responses especially when it comes to survival activities
What survival activities does the limbic system take care of
-feeding
-reproduction
-taking care of our young
-fight or flight response
In the cerebral cortex, the lobes consist of:
the outer grey bark structure that is wrinkled in order to create more surface area for 20+ billion neurons
What do the inner white stuff-axons do
Connect the neurons or nerve cells, linking parts of the brain
How many glial cells are there
180+ billion glial cells
What do glial cells do
Feed and protect neurons and assist neural transmission
How many lobes are there in the cerebral cortex
4:
-Frontal lobes
-Parietal lobes
-Occipital lobes
-Temporal lobes
Frontal lobes
Involved in speaking and muscle movement and in making plans and judgment
Parietal lobes
Vital sensory perception(involved in the senses) and integration. Manages smelling, taste, hearing, seeing and touching. Brain interprets the input from other parts of the body
Occipital lobes
Includes visual processing area of the brain. Associated with processing of distance, depth, perception, color determination, object, facial recognition, and memory formation
Temporal lobes
Includes processing of auditory info and encoding memory
Plasticity
brain is flexible to recover from damage(reroutes)
When the brain is damaged, what does it not repair but can restore
Brain does not repair damaged neurons, but can restore same functions
