❓❓❓What is mental illness?
-a psychological dysfunction experienced by an individual
☀️☀️☀️MENTAL HEALTH
- associated with mind and behaviour in the same way that physicals health is associated with body and behaviour
- good mental health is reflected in how well we deal with the emotions we experience in our lives
- range from mentally healthy to mental health problem(short term) to mental illness
- in some cases mental health problems develop into a mental illness
❓❓❓What are the four characteristics of a mental illness?
- psychological dysfunction
- distress
- impaired functioning
- atypical
- atypical: cultural appropriateness
❓❓❓What is psychological dysfunction?
- a breakdown in normal functioning including cognitive, emotional, behavioural
- the thoughts, feelings and behaviour differ from those the person would normally experience in that situation
❓❓❓What is distress?
- when someone is distressed, they are extremely upset
- fuelled by a lack of control over thoughts and feelings
❓❓❓What is impaired functioning?
-if a person in unable to do the kinds of things they normally do on a daily basis, they are considered to have impaired functioning
❓❓❓What is atypical?
-the person responds in a way that is not normal for them in terms of thoughts, feelings and behaviour
❓❓❓What is atypical: cultural appropriateness?
-each culture/society has its own set of norms (standards about what is considered normal and abnormal behaviour within that culture/society)
❓❓❓What is a psychotic illness?
-(psychosis) loss of contact with reality
-delusions
-hallucinations
E.g. Schizophrenia
❓❓❓What is a delusion?
-person believes things that are not real
E.g. Belief that you have a superpower
❓❓❓What is a hallucination?
-hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting things that are not present
❓❓❓What is a non-psychotic illness?
-person is still in touch with reality, but cannot cope with it
-May experience sadness, anxiety, fear to such an extent that they have difficulty coping with daily activities
E.g.
Anxiety disorders (phobias, OCD)
Mood disorders (depression)
