2
Q

what is semantic memory

A

shared knowledge of the world
impressive number of concepts
less personal
constantly being added to
tulving- less vulnerable to distortion and forgetting than episodic

Q

what is procedural memory

A

actions or skills
can recall without conscious effort
find it hard to explain and might become more difficult to do when describe how to

Q

what is the study of clive wearing

A

severe form of amnesia resulting from viral infection
world class musician and can still play piano and conduct choir
cant remember musical education
can remember some aspects of life before infection
remembers second wife and greets her joyously as if he hasnt seen her for years even if she just left the room

Q

what are the clinical evidence evaluation

A

strengths
-support from hm and clive wearing
- episodic memory in both were severly damaged semantic and procedural memories intact
- supports tulving- different stores in ltm- one store can be damaged others arent
weakness
- clincal studies arent perfect
- lack control over variables
- researcher has no way controlling what happened to pps before or after and had no knowledge of memory before
- difficult to judge how much worse it is after
- lack of control limits what clinical studies can tell us about different types of ltm

Q

what are the conflicting neuroimaging evidence evaluation

A

weakness
- conflicting research findings linking types og ltm
- buckner and peterson- semantic and episodic located on left side of prefrontal cortex
- other research left prefrontal cortex with encoding episodic and right side with episodic retrieval
- challenged neurophysiological evidence
- poor agreement to locations

Q

what are the real world application evaluation

A

strengths
- help people with memory problems with greater understanding
- people age experience trouble with episodic
- belleville devised intervention, trained pps performed better on episodic test after training than control group
- distinguishing two types enables specific treatment to be developed
