psychology multistore model Flashcards
who developed msm
atkison and shiffran
what is the sensory register
all stimuli from environment passes through
comprises several registers one for each of our senses
coding is modality specific
store coding visual info is iconic
store coding acoustic is echoic
duration is less than half a second
has a very high capacity due to millions of receptors
info only passes further if we pay attention to it
what is the stm
coding acoustic
duration 18-30secs
capcity 7+-2
maintenance and prolonged rehearsal for it to stay in the stm
what is the ltm
coding semantically
duration up to a lifetime
capacity unlimited
when we want to recall info it has to transfer back to stm through retrieval
what is the case of HM
underwent brain surgery to relieve epilepsy but was still in infancy and wasnt fully understood
when assessed thought the year was 1953 instead of 1955 and thought he was 27 instead of 31
has no recall of the procedure
cant make new long term memory
performs well on an immediate memory span as a test of measure stm
what are the research supports evaluation points
strengths
- support from studies showing that ltm and stm are different stores
- baddeley tend to mix up words semantically similar when ltm and acoustically similar when using stm
- clearly shows different stores
weakness
- form meaningful material- used artificial stimuli
- may not be valid model of how memory words in everyday memory tasks
what are more than one stm store evaluation points
weakness
- evidence fro more than one stm store
- kf- amnesia patient, stm for digits was poor when read out loud but better when read to himself
- msm wrong in claiming that there is just one stm store processing different types of info
what are the elaborative rehearsal evaluation points
weakness
- prolonged rehearsal not needed to transfer info to ltm
- msm says what matters is the quantity
- craik and watkins- type of rehearsal that matters
- msm doesnt fully explain how long term storage is achieved
