Psychology Perspectives Finger Mnemonic Flashcards
All of the fingers and how they are used to remember psych perspectives + extras
What is the THUMB for
UNCONSCIOUS - Use an action of pointing behind you with your thumb. You are unaware and unconscious of what is behind you, just like the person is unaware of their unconscious processes and patterns in this perspective.
What is the INDEX FINGER for
COGNITIVE - Use an action of pointing/tapping your index finger on your head like you’re trying to think of something or remember something. In the same way, this perspective is about your conscious thoughts and memories.
What is the MIDDLE FINGER for
BEHAVIORAL - Use an action (not really!) of giving the middle finger. This is a behavior and it is a behavior that needs to be learned. In the same way, this perspective explains our psychology by focusing on our behavior and how we learned it.
What is the RING FINGER for
HUMANISTIC - In some cultures, people may wear a ring on this finger to symbolize that they are partnered with someone which helps to meet the basic human needs and motivation for love, connection, etc. This perspective explains our psychology by using our basic human needs and motivations
What is the PINKY FINGER for
BIOLOGICAL - This should be your smallest finger! Remember that small things you never think about (brain parts, neuron cells, neurotransmitters, hormones, etc.) make you who you are.
What is the PALM for
SOCIAL-CULTURAL - Think of high-fiving or shaking hands with someone. It is an action outside of you…. It’s about the context, environment, groups of people around you, etc. These things affect
your psychology.
What is the WRIST for
EVOLUTIONARY - Imagine a wrist that needed an adaptive trait to help with survival, like evolving a hand with fingers. In the same way, the evolutionary perspective says that certain traits we have evolved because the traits helped with our survival or reproduction success.
What is the FIST for
BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL - Realize that most behaviors or things about us need multiple perspectives to explain them. So, imagine wrapping your hand around your fist to indicate that a combination of
different fingers/perspectives are needed to help explain our behavior.
