Psychology - Memory - WMM Flashcards
define the working memory model
an explanation of the memory used when working on a task
WMM
working memory model
a strength of the WMM
there is evidence from dual task studies to support the model. It is easier to do two tasks at the same time if they use different processing systems verbal and visual, than if they use the same slave system
a weakness of the WMM
little is known about how the central executive works or evidence from brain studies
central executive
controls the slave systems, limited capacity but can process information from sensory modality
monitors and coordinates all other mental functions in WMM
phonological loop
limited capacity, temporary storage system for holding verbal information in a speech based form
Maintenance rehearsal - repeating the words over and over again in a loop
visuo-spatial sketchpad
limited capacity, temporary memory system for holding visual and spatial information
episodic buffer
receives input from many sources, temporarily stores this information and integrates it in order to construct a mental episode of what is being experienced
cognitive interview
a method of interviewing eyewitness victims about what they remember from a crime scene. Using 4 retrievals
4 stages of the cognitive interview
- change perspective
- mental reinstatement
- report everything
- change order
a study that shows the strengths of the cognitive interview
fisher et al 1990
witness reported greater detail in their accounts of crimes when american detectives trained to use the technique
a study that shows the weaknesses of the cognitive interview
koehnken 1999
witness recalled more incorrect information when interviewed with the cognitive interview
