Schaffer and Emerson
what year did that suggest this
1964
procedure
60 babies from Glasgow at monthly intervals for the first 18 months of life using a longitudinal method
- kids studied in this own homes, visited monthly for 1 year
- by 10months most babies had several attachments i.e mother, father, siblings
- 18m mother main figure for half, father for other half
longitudinal method
a research design in which pp’s are repeatedly assessed over an extended period with repeated evaluations which are spread across several years
aim
-interactions with mothers were analysed to establish if and when infants started to display separation anxiety
findings
attachments were most likely to form when carers who were sensitive to the baby’s signals rather than the person they spend most time with.
