Development
Refers to changes that occur over time
Infancy
born - 2 years
Childhood
2-10
Adolescence

Physical development
Physical or biological changes within your body
e.g. voice breaking, menstruate, taller, grow or lose hair.
Cognitive development
Changes in mental abilities
e.g. gain memories, learn more, improve logical skills.
Emotional development
Changes in how we feel and express our emotions
e.g. the way we feel and express anger at 2 is different to what it is at 35.
Social development
Involves skills with interacting and dealing with other people.
e.g. significant relationships change as you get older
The Great Debate
Whether it is heredity or environment that determines how we develop.
Recently, more about how they interact, and which one has the GREATER influence over development.
Nature
(Heredity)
Involves the transmission of characteristics from biological parents to their offspring via genetics at the time of conception.
e.g. if parents have likelihood of depression so will offspring.
Nurture
(Environment)
Used to refer to all experiences, objects and events we are exposed to throughout our lifetime.
e.g. siblings, ethnic origins, how you’re brought up, schooling/occupation, jobs.
Twin studies
Involve using identical twins and non-identical twins to determine if nature or nurture as a greater influence on development.
